What is Trezor?

Trezor states to be the original and most secure hardware wallet for cryptocurrencies.

It allows you to make Bitcoin (and other coins) transactions. The transactions are completely safe even on a compromised computer. There are only two buttons to confirm and to deny transactions. The use of Trezor is intuitive and easy. It uses the state of the art cryptography algorithms and practices, making it one of the best hardware wallets in the cryptocurrency space.

It has been founded in Prague in 2013 in cooperation with SatoshiLabs.

Trezor Security

The device is backed up by a 12, 18 or 24 word phrase. This recovery seed it compatible with the common standard for HD wallet which is BIP32/39/44. The seed is generated the first time you run Trezor. It will help you to recover private keys, your bitcoin balance and your transaction history.

Trezor has no keyboard, thus being protected against keyloggers. The PIN will be entered on the device directly.

The software design of Trezor is open-source and it is regularly updated.

On top of supporting several coins, Trezor can also be used as a two-factor authentication (2FA/U2F) for your online accounts such as e.g. GitLab, Dropbox or WordPress.

In addition to your PIN you can also create an extra password. Every password is equal to a new account on Trezor, hence you can have multiple balances on your Trezor. This is named a hidden wallet.

In summer 2017 Trezor had a security glitch. Anyone with physical access to the device was able to read the seed and PIN from the device memory. This issue has been fixed quickly with a firmware update.

Trezor One

The Trezor One launched in 2014. It is the first generation of hardware wallet from Trezor.

It is a very light and small device which can be ordered in different colors. The well-designed security token uses a USB Micro-B slot and it is compatible with Windows 7+, Mac 10.8+ and Linux. It has two buttons where you can accept or deny transactions. The firmware can be updated regularly through the Trezor software/user interface. It is the most used cryptocurrency hardware wallet up to date and fairly easy to use also for non-tech people.
